Election 2010 Media Release 2010-05-19 This is such a wonderful welcome. I thank you so much the people of Marabella, the people of San Fernando. You made me imagine what I would read in the newspaper on Tuesday 25th May 2010. I took up the Guardian and there in bold headlines I saw: "The People's Partnership forms the new government of Trinidad and Tobago". And then I said let me verify that, so I picked up the Newsday, and I saw the headline "Kamla Persad-Bissessar: the next Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago". And then I said, something must be wrong, so I picked up the Express, and what was the headline? "Manning government collapses. Rowley and Manning fighting to be Opposition Leader". It happens that they have already voted themselves out of office of Trinidad and Tobago. Listen to what Selwyn Ryan, that noted political scientist had to say, and you will bear with me because I think it is important for those who have not read it to hear what this honourable academic and political columnist said on 16th May, a few days ago: "This column has been the witness to at least ten general elections over the past 4 decades. In almost all of them, the exception being those in 1976 and 1986, I had supported the PNM whether implicitly or explicitly. We are now in 2010 and face many new and daunting political challenges and economic challenges. After having thought carefully about all that has happened to us as a people since 2007 and indeed before, and having also considered the issues and the options available to us in terms of leadership, I find that I cannot possibly support the PNM and I have no alternative but to endorse the People's Partnership coalition". |

Election 2010 Media Release 2010-05-18 Winston Dookeran, political leader of the Congress of the People, is part of the opposition coalition seeking to unseat Prime Minister Patrick Manning of Trinidad and Tobago in May 24 elections. Dookeran, former Governor of the Trinidad and Tobago Central Bank, discussed local and international issues in a recent interview with Miami Herald World Editor John Yearwood. Here are excerpts: Q: There are some who would argue that the Trinidad economy is doing well and that Prime Minister Patrick Manning has spent money to increase the country's profile. Is that not a good thing? A: It is, provided that there are returns for that increased profile. Increased profile in its own right is no real economic benefit to the country. The economy is strong but it is fragile and much more susceptible to external developments than it has ever been. We have a strong economy but weak economic future.

Election 2010 Media Release 2010-05-18 If you ever wanted to hear a member of parliament defend the people, elect Rocky Garcia to be that man. Tonight as I stand here in the midst of all these candidates, I feel a sense of total satisfaction that the Congress of the People has now grown to the stage where we will walk into the parliament of Trinidad and Tobago next week Monday carrying the torch of your wishes, your desires and your hopes for years to come. My friends, it is symbolic that the president house roof collapsed. Because it is symbolic of the fact that Mr. Manning's government has collapsed and now we the people must get up and get a new government and put it into place. That is the symbolic nature of that event. And when I see what is happening when Mr. Manning is campaigning here and Mr. Rowley is campaigning there, and they are campaigning for the same government that one condemned and the other one denied the claims, I realize that these two men are shadow boxing in Trinidad and Tobago and its time they get into the real fight for government. |

Election 2010 Media Release 2010-05-17 My people of Tunapuna, my people of Trinidad and Tobago, let us declare in one voice, right now, that Kamla Persad-Bissessar will be the next Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago. The expectations are high; there is electricity on the ground. As I walked through this crowd this afternoon, I almost was brought to tears of joy for what has happened to our people in Trinidad and Tobago. Finally, alas, we shall shake up the politics of Trinidad and Tobago and we shall start the road of building a new society in this nation of ours. So we must start our business as from tonight. In eight days to come a People's Partnership government shall be installed by the President of this country, to be your next government and you are the ones who have brought it about. For three long years we have stood up one by one and we have said enough to the politics of the past, you embrace wholeheartedly the challenge of getting our politics right. You know it is only by so doing you shall bring new ideas to our nation, you shall bring new leadership to our people, you shall bring new politics to our society and you shall do that at this time, the new time, for Trinidad and Tobago, for our people. And that is why we are here tonight. We are here so that we can put a country back on track as we embrace the 2010 manifesto of the People's Partnership. It is entitled "Prosperity for All". I come to you here tonight as the candidate for the constituency of Tunapuna. |
