Election 2010 Media Release
2010-05-27

I would like to thank the Hon. Esther Le Gendre, the outgoing member of Parliament for Tunapuna for her service and representation to this constituency, and I wish her well.

Tonight we meet at this great junction called Caura, along a road which goes east and west, and where our people, beginning with our First People, built a civilization.

I welcome Mrs Kamla Persad Bissessar, the political leader of the United National Congress, in the ground breaking role, as the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago

I wish to thank the people of Tunapuna (a place described by our ancestors as "on the river"), for the great privilege and honor they have conferred on me to represent you in the Parliament of this country.

I salute all the activists who have dedicated the past five weeks to achieving this great victory. I would like to single out my co- campaign mangers Mr Joshey Mahabir and Mr. Hamlyn Jailal.

Election 2010 Media Release

My friends, my people, let us declare in one voice, right here right now, that Kamla Persad-Bissessar will be the next Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago on Tuesday May the 25th.

The hills of Laventille are here; the plains of Naparima are here; and Tunapuna is here as well. And it's licks like fire in Tunapuna come Monday. All of Trinidad and Tobago is here. For many years, I have travelled this journey, listening and learning. I felt your pain. I shared your agony. I listened to your inner voices for a better tomorrow. Today, in Aranguez, in this little nation of ours, it is finally happening. It is finally happening. It is here. It is your victory that is about to take place in this country shortly. It is your vision for a united people that has come alive, and nothing, nothing, nobody will stop it from going on and going on and going on and going on, as we build this nation how we want to make it.

Your joy is here today. At last we have formed together. At last we have formed the People's Partnership, the vehicle to take us further into government in our country. It is the spirit of the partnership that is reflected here today in your presence, and it is that spirit of the partnership that endorses what Trinidad and Tobago wants now - the spirit of freedom for all times. Tell me, do you feel the power of the People's Partnership? Do you believe that we have now come here for a common, noble purpose? And do you have faith that we will win?

Election 2010 Media Release

Mrs. Kamla Persad-Bissessar, the person who will start writing the new book in Trinidad and Tobago very shortly, my friends and colleagues, I almost felt that I was in the first cabinet meeting in the new Government of Trinidad and Tobago and I am asked to speak to you on issues of economy and finance.

In other words, how shall we pay for the promise of a better tomorrow. The truth is the real resources that we have to muster is not the financial resources, as important as it will be, but it is a new energy that must be based on harnessing the values of a new leadership and a society that builds a sense confidence and trust that a new leadership shall adhere to those values.

To me, that is how we will eventually pay for the promise of a better tomorrow, and it is in that context I believe that we are at a historical moment in our country when the underlying and fundamental crisis we are facing, is a crisis of values, in which our society has gone wrong and we must put it right. To do so, we must of course address the hard issues of the economy and finance and you have seen in the Manifesto, you will see in the Manifesto shortly when you read it, a great trust towards sustainable development and the use of the word 'sustainable' is very deliberate.

For we are looking not only about today's generation, but we shall be looking at tomorrow's generation. We shall be the spokesperson of our citizens, not yet born and we shall leave them an inheritance better than the one we have in fact inherited ourselves.

THE BURDEN OF LEADERSHIP

My friends, my people of Trinidad and Tobago, tonight I want to be sober and reflective. I want to do my duty to my nation. Victory may be near, but it is not yet in our hands. Our nation is in danger and we must be fearless. So tonight, I want you to become fearless, sitting in the midst of the danger that could befall our land. I want you to remember that great nations and great people do have defining moments, and if the people as a whole do not capture the essence and energy of those defining moments, the danger can continue.

We talk about victory. We talk about victory as if it is the celebration of power. So they say. And that is how we have viewed politics. Victory to me is really about the celebration of leadership and what we must focus on is the burden of leadership at this time in our nation's life.

What do I mean by the burden of leadership? How do we connect with the pain, the real pain of our mothers, our daughters, our sons and our fathers. How do we hold faith with the enormous desire of our people to live, work and cling together as one people? How do we converse with ourselves to engender real trust between the leaders and the people?

Address by Winston Dookeran - Diego Martin PDF Print E-mail

Election 2010 Media Release
2010-05-20

There is no doubt that Diego Martin is on the verge of a great victory. Your presence here is in the thousands, and I am told by Rolf that it is a wholly Diego Martin crowd. I want you to understand that for the next four days we must remain cool. We must remain cool because we are about to cross the final hurdle in the creation of a new Trinidad and Tobago. We must walk that bridge in coolness and in calmness. Whatever provocation may come your way, just be cool, just be cool. By being cool you will defeat everything ahead of you. I see in the audience a few people who I must recognise because I think we are coming to the end of what will turn out to be a major campaign in our country. I see Lisa in the audience, as well as Kathryn, Annie and Renata, who have been working from the Flagship House selflessly and I want to thank them for all the work that they have done. Each time I come to a Congress of the People National Meeting I feel that sense of accomplishment on the way the meeting is organized, the way the platform is set up, and the way the entire procedure is put into place. There are many people in the background, who have worked to make us where we are today and I want to pay a special tribute to the team that puts these meetings together physically and logistically: Sarwan Ragbir, Lisa Mohammed, Chris, Ramesh, Primal, Angie Benjamin, Nadia Mohammed and Kenny. Thank you very much for the work that you have been doing.
